Rose on The Road - Western North Carolina and Virginia Foliage

October 17, 2008 11:36 by Rose

This past holiday weekend we were on the road driving along the Blue Ridge Parkway and Skyline Drive.   As you can see, the trees were just starting to show color so there is still time to view the fall foliage in the Smokies and Blue Ridge Mountains.

Here are links to inns in the North Carolina Mountain area and Virginia’s Blue Ridge and Shenandoah areas.

This is a beautiful area where you will also find many wonderful restaurants and wineries.  A favorite of ours is the Chateau Morrisette, which is one of the very few wineries that serves lunch and dinner.  The winery is located at Milepost 171-5 on the Blue Ridge Parkway and is a great stop on the drive. The restaurant is open the entire month of October as well as other months during the year. Check the website for more info; I recommend reservations during peak seasons.

Enjoy the drive! Rose

Rose On The Road - Churchtown, PA

September 3, 2008 09:13 by Rose

As we plot out our trip to the southwest, it hit me that I will not be doing "Leaf Peeping" in the northeast this year. One of my editor picks for our Fall Foliage release in 2007 was the Inn at Twin Linden, and it is still remains a favorite. This comfortably elegant B&B is one we have visited more than once and at different times of the year. Early fall is especially lovely, and it's a great time to visit farm markets, attend fairs, go antiquing and pumpkin picking. Pumpkin picking and enjoying the cornfield maze in nearby Morgantown is a fun adventure that adults can also enjoy in the fall. Innkeepers Sue & Norm Kuestner will be happy to help you plan your day. They are a delight! Detour from the fast lane, unwind on the country roads in Churchtown and just keep pace with the horse and buggies. Then enjoy being pampered back at the inn with fresh flowers, evening cordials and Godiva chocolates in your room.  An imaginative breakfast is is prepared each day by Sue, and Norm serves you at a table set with china, crystal and candles. Breakfast by candlelight can be so romantic. Dinner is served on Saturday evenings so if you book on the weekend, I highly recommend you make a reservation and enjoy a multi-course dinner in the dining room overlooking the gardens which are lit after dark with garden lights.

Back soon with more Rose on the Road...

Fall Foliage Picks from BedandBreakfast.com Editors

August 8, 2008 10:44 by Marti

Each year the BedandBreakfast.com editors and associate editors (a.k.a. your blogger friends) put our heads together to choose some of our top picks for fall foliage viewing.  There are so many gorgous B&Bs from which to take in autumn scenery that we say "there's more than one place to peep a leaf"!  For avid inngoers or armchair leaf peepers, we thought we might share some of our thoughts for the best places for foliage getaways.  The 2008 picks include such favorites as:

View of the White Mountains aflame in fall color from Sunset Hill House

Franconia, NH, Sugar Hill Inn: Just like this inn's name, the views from throughout this inn are sweet, especially during fall foliage. Surrounded by the scenic White Mountains, the panorama is alive with color so bold it glows in the sun. Add fine dining, culinary events and beautifully restored guest rooms and cottages, and you'll know why Bette Davis loved to vacation here. For another scenic Franconia fall foliage choice, consider the nearby Sunset Hill House.

Townsend, TN, Gracehill Inn and Richmont Inn: They call this the peaceful side of the Smoky Mountains, where natural beauty, wildlife watching and spectacular mountain views reign. Gracehill offers a 360-degree view of the Great Smoky Mountain Park, while Richmont offers leaf peepers private decks and trails.

Leavenworth, WA, Abendblume Pension: Set on 20 acres overlooking dramatic vistas of the Cascade Mountains, this decidedly European inn fits in well with the Bavarian-themed town, just a mile away. While the mountains and views attract outdoor adventurers from throughout the Northwest, some prefer to enjoy the views from the outdoor hot tub or private balconies overlooking the grounds.
