No segment of the society has gone unscathed from economic challenges but none have been harder hit then the non-profits who’ve seen crucial donations dwindle over the past year.  As harbingers of hospitality, innkeepers are dedicated to providing quality care for others.  This is part one in a series of stories about Diamond Collection members’ creative efforts to help raise funds for non-profit causes.

Whispering Pines Bed & Breakfast of Dellroy, OH is taking a two-pronged approach to their eco-friendly donations.  Innkeeper and owner, Linda Horn, reported that the inn has adopted two miles of road on each side in front of the inn. To enlist volunteers, they have created a special “volunteer and stay” package where participants receive two nights for the price of one when they help in the inns efforts to keep the highway clean on Mondays, Tuesdays or Wednesdays. From the time guests first learned about the package, they’ve lined up to participate.

Additionally, Whispering Pines B&B is one of a few small, independently owned, eco-friendly inns and B&B’s across the country that will be beta testing a new program called WinterGreen in 2010.  Partnering with the Wilderness Society, The idea is simple. Stay at Whispering Pines Bed & Breakfast and other participating inns will donate two percent of lodging revenues for stays of two-days or longer to The Wilderness Society to protect the wilderness and inspire Americans to care for its wild places.

"We are all committed to protecting these wild, beautiful areas of our country," said Linda Horn. "We are honored to work with The Wilderness Society in WinterGreen Vacations, a program we hope will become a major annual promotion generating strong financial support for their outstanding work while supporting the wilderness treasures of America.”

Founded in 1935, The Wilderness Society’s mission is to protect wilderness and inspire Americans to care for our wild places. From writing and passing the landmark Wilderness Act to winning lasting protection for more than 109 million acres of permanent wilderness across the country to date, The Wilderness Society is America’s premier public lands conservation organization.  The Wilderness Society and its 500,000 members and supporters are dedicated to protecting America’s wilderness and to developing a nationwide network of these iconic wild lands through public education, scientific analysis and advocacy.

Whispering Pines Bed & Breakfast is a small 9-room inn overlooking the beautiful lush landscape and scenic views of Atwood Lake in the rolling hills of Carroll County, a naturally beautiful environment.  Their warm and inviting guest rooms feature a two-person whirlpool tub, electric fireplace and private balcony for admiring the hillside views, lake, gardens and wildlife. The manmade ponds, waterfalls and streams are its own eco-system where the fish live in recycled chemical free water cleared with natural barley.  Whispering Pines B&B is a member of the quickly growing BedandBreakfast.com Diamond Collection.
