B&B in Midtown Atlanta is Both Urbane and Unique

August 30, 2009 21:51 by Maxine

Meticulously restored in 2008,  Stonehurst Place opened its doors as a bed and breakfast inn less than a year ago. Already it is being acclaimed as one of Atlanta's most outstanding inns for individuals traveling to Atlanta on business or pleasure. A delightful shingle-style house, built in 1896, Stonehurst Place is conveniently located in midtown Atlanta close to downtown businesses as well as the arts district. Stonehurst Place is situated upon a hill with English-inspired gardens; a whimsical fountain embellishes the front garden and can be enjoyed from the front porch. Magnificent architectural stone formations contribute to the overall beauty of the property's exterior. On-site parking is available, and fine dining is within walking distance.

Though characterized by a feel of urbane sophistication, Stonehurst Inn also exudes a sense of welcoming warmth. The inn has 3 porches for guests to enjoy, and I thoroughly enjoyed relaxing on each of them. A former sleeping porch (on the second level) has been attractively converted into an enclosed "porch" overlooking the gardens below. The front porch (above photo on left) allows guests to view Atlanta's skyscrapers while surrounded by trees and listening to piped-in music. The third porch (above photo on right) is also located on the main level and overlooks the well-manicured gardens. The middle photo shows afternoon refreshments offered to guests each afternoon in the living room. In addition to luxurious appointments throughout the inn, Stonehurst Place is an eco-friendly property featuring water conservation systems and solar energy. It is also a pet-friendly inn and even offers a "Pampered Pooch Package!"

No matter "what's your pleasure," one of  the rooms or suites at Stonehurst is sure to please you. I stayed in The Master Suite, an ideal choice for one traveling on business with its separate work area and spacious sitting room. The Master Suite's commodious bathroom is one of the grandest baths I have ever experienced and truly exemplifies the ultimate in bathroom luxury. In addition to a walk-in multi head shower and spa tub (middle photo above), it includes a separate water closet (with a toilet and a bidet), 2 oversized lavatories, a heated floor and towel rack. Two of my other favorite bedchambers at Stonehurst Place are The Hinman Suite (left photo above), furnished in elegant antiques, and The Gables Suite featuring contemporary design. Free WiFi access is available throught the inn, and each guest room is equipped with individual temperature control, a flat screen TV (with DVD/CD player),and an iPod/mobile phone/PDA charging station.
A delicious gourmet breakfast is beautifully served each morning in the formal dining room (shown above), or guests may eat on the adjacent porch when the weather is nice. Barb Shadomy, the inn's owner, is a world traveler who has incorporated bits and pieces of her international experiences into her B&B. And as a frequent traveler, she is well attuned to the special touches that contribute to making an inn one that is top-notch. Barb is assisted by Trenell Smith, an amicable and capable innkeeper who knows how to make guests glad they chose Stonehurst Place. I have no doubt that this is a bed and breakfast that will be heard much about in the Atlanta area and beyond. I enthusiastically recommend it!

Shangri-la in The Smokies

August 6, 2009 11:28 by Maxine

Since childhood, I have always enjoyed vacationing in The Great Smoky Mountains. However, some of the popular areas I remember visiting in earlier
years have now become overcrowded, overpriced, and too commercialized to provide the relaxation and tranquility I seek on a mountain getaway. That is
why I was so excited about my discovery of Creekwalk Inn & Cabins in Cosby, TN located on the outskirts of Gatlinburg. Situated in a pastoral setting,
the log cabin B&B is located on Whisperwood Farm's 47 acres enhanced by 1,300 feet of creek frontage.

The distinctively decorated guestrooms, each named after a favorite site in the area, at Creekside Inn reflect unique artistry flavored with casual elegance.
Hand-crafted rustic furnishings provide the perfect touch for this delightful mountain retreat. Each room has a view of either the creek or the meadow.
I loved staying in the Hannah Mountain master suite (center photo above) with a king-sized rhododendrum bed, a double shower, and direct access
to the creekside porch. Ramsey Cascade (far left photo above) is another popular room with guests and features a queen-sized bed nestled in an alcove,
a Jacuzzi tub, and it also opens onto the creekside porch. There are seven guest rooms at the bed and breakfast (each with a private bath), and the entire
inn may be reserved for weddings or other special events. The property also offers fully-equipped cabins and lodges available for rental nearby.

Creekwalk Inn specializes in intimate wedding ceremonies and offers customized wedding packages. The property is complete with its own wedding chapel as well
as a wedding reception lodge capable of seating 150+ guests. Every detail for an idyllic wedding may be arranged by the wedding professionals associated with Whisperwood Farm's Creekwalk Inn.
I was fortunate in visiting Creekwalk Inn when the Hayne's daughter, Kelsey, was serving as the very capable in-house chef. I decided to have dinner at the inn (advance reservations required), and it was an excellent decision! The multiple course meal Kelsey prepared and served me was absolutely phenomenal as well as beautifully presented. I enjoyed an equally delicious breakfast, overlooking the creek, while there. At each meal I took delight in being served a dish I had never before experienced, and I was amazed with Kelsey's impressive culinary skills.

The owners/innkeepers of Whisperwood Farm's Creekwalk Inn, Janice and Tifton Haynes, are knowledgeable about the well-known attractions and things to do
in the Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge areas, and they are helpful in making suggestions for excursions that best fit their guests' interests and time frame. The Haynes have a knack for making guests feel welcomed and excited about visiting Creekwalk Inn even before their arrival. Even though the foliage is spectacular in this area in the fall, Creekwalk Inn offers something just as magnificent in every season of the year from meadows dotted with colorful wildflowers in the spring to verdant pastures in the summer. Creekwalk Inn is definitely a place I would love to revisit, and I highly recommend it to other B&B afficionados!

Experience a High-end Hilltop B&B in the Majestic Mountains of NC

July 26, 2009 17:40 by Maxine

Grand Foyer

Winding through the picturesque pastoral landscape, I feel embraced by the tranquility enhancing the area's natural beauty. Once I park my car and begin approaching the hilltop inn, I notice a small sign at the door I am about to enter: "First time guests please use front entrance." Smiling to myself, I think about how many times I have insisted that first time visitors to my home enter through my home's "official" and most inviting entrance, rather than the more convenient back doorway. At this point, I instinctively know I will relate easily to the owner/innkeeper of Bed and Breakfast on Tiffany Hill and will likely find her to be just as fanatical about attention-to-detail and protocol as I am.

Even before I ring the doorbell (at the appropriate entrance!), Selena opens the door with the welcoming smile and gracious hospitality of a quintessential Southern hostess. One quick glance at her—and the interior beyondis all it takes to know I am right.

        Living Room   Porch

As I step into a grand foyer, flanked by handsome staircases leading to guestrooms on the second floor, Selena points out an attractive guest library. This attractive room provides an ideal work area for business travelers, an "extra" not usually found at small bed and breakfast inns. Wifi is accessible for guests throughout the inn. I am immediately drawn into the high-style and tasteful decor of this inn—the fulfillment of a dream (also see Asheville Times) Selena Einwechter tenaciously and meticulously pursued for over a quarter of a century. The result of her creative abilities and business savvy is reflected at every turna labor of love shared by and contributed to by a host of Selena's friends who believed in the dream as well.

I especially like the living room and the back porch enabling guests to enjoy the woodsy acreage (leading to seven unique garden vignettes) behind the inn—including a "bird house" observatory large enough for several adults to enjoy birdwatching, a whimsical spot with a collection of birdhouses perched upon a fallen log, landscaped walking paths, and a secret garden. Plans are currently underway for a labyrinth to be created in the near future for more "concentrated" strolling.

Garden Path Bird Observatory Whimsical garden vignette

There are five guest rooms/suites at the inn, and Seaside Suite (ADA accessible and shown below on far right) is located on the main level with a six foot walk-in shower. Each guest room/suite is named after a favorite Southern town of the owner, and each of these delightful towns is also a favorite of mine: Beaufort, SC; Natchez, MS; Charlottesville, VA; Madison, GA; and Seaside, FL. One stairwell leads to Natchez and Charlottesville; the other leads to Beaufort and Madison. Each room is elegantly appointed, yet designed for the ultimate in pampering comfort. The Beaufort Suite has two window seats which cleverly convert into a pair of twin beds—ideal for parents traveling with children. The Natchez Suite, where I stayed, is especially appealing for a woman traveling alone. It also has a windowseat where I enjoyed reading a book while overlooking horse pastures and listening to piped-in music.

All beds are swathed in luxurious linens, pillow selections are available, custom-made full-length mirrors are found in each guest room, and the well-lit bathrooms provide ample storage area for toiletries and cosmetics. Outside the landing of each staircase, there is a guest refreshment center (featuring a Keurig single cup coffeemaker with assorted beverage selections and a variety of snacks) which services the two guest rooms it is located between. Another guest refreshment area is on the main floor in the dining room, including an ice-maker. Whenever one ascends or descends the stairs, an automatic light comes on so guests never have to worry about trodding steps in the dark.

Natchez Room Charlottesville Suite Seaside

The dining room provides an exquisite setting for a gourmet breakfast freshly prepared each morning. When the weather is nice, as it was during my visit, guests may choose to be served breakfast on the covered porch. A hopeless romantic, Selena had "Breakfast at Tiffany's" penned in script on one of the dining room's upper walls (see photo below). When looking at Audrey Hepburn's framed photograph, hanging on one of the dining room walls, I can almost hear "Moon River" playing in the background. I have no doubt the famous star would be pleased to have her photograph gracing the wall of a room as stunning as she.

     Dining Room

Since childhood, I have always enjoyed the magic of the mountains of Western North Carolina where there is so much to see and do every season of the year. Ideally located in the midst of "The Playground of the South," The Bed and Breakfast at Tiffany Hill provides an exceptional bed and breakfast experience for the most discerning of guests. As a very "discerning guest," I know for a fact I will be making a return visit when I can stay longer and savor each memory-making moment more completely.

Asian-themed Bed & Spa Provides Rejuvenation in The Mountains of NC

July 22, 2009 16:50 by Maxine

 Asia Bed and Spa

If you've been looking for an inn where you can pitter-patter about all day in a comfy robe and spa slippers, indulge in a wide range of rejuvenating body treatments, luxuriate in an exhilarating sauna, or just veg out in a meditation garden, Asia Bed and Spa is a place offering all of this plus more. A meticulously restored arts and crafts home located in a wooded neighborhood, Asia Bed and Spa captures the essence of tranquility and relaxation at its best.

Bed in Jave Journey suite    Tub in Appalachian suite   Silk Route

I enjoyed my stay in the light-filled Java Journey (shown above on far left), bedchamber with its king-sized bed, double Jacuzzi, working fireplace, mini-fridge, and attractive decorofferings found in each of the distinctive guest suites at Asia Bed and Spa. I especially enjoyed being able to look out over the Japanese gardens, replete with stepping stones and a trickling fountain, from my suite. However, I am confident I would have been just as happy in any of the other Asian-inspired guest rooms at this unique inn.

Breakfast at Asia Spa

Julie is a wonderful, multi-talented innkeeper. She enjoys cooking, and her culinary talents are evident each morning at breakfast. Guests make their selections from an attractively arranged buffet set up in the inn's dining room. After placing their food and beverages on an Asian-style tray, they are invited to select an area to enjoy their freshly prepared meal. My favorite breakfast spot is the living room's window seat, located in a cozy nook overlooking the manicured front garden.

Sauna  Entrance to Meditation Garden   Shower in Sauna

The spa facilities and treatment menus at Asia Bed and Spa are some of the best I have seen at a B&B anywhere. A state-of-the-art European steam shower is available for guests to enjoy at any time during their stay at the inn, and I especially recommend using it prior to having massage therapy. Following a massage, the secluded Sauna courtyard (adjacent to the massage area) provides completion to the spa experience. The licensed massage therapists and body workers, who maintain independent practices in the Asheville area, come to Asia Bed and Spa to provide the treatment desiredincluding massage therapy, body and face treatments. Arrangements may be made either prior to one's arrival at the inn or after settling in.

    Magnolia's Restaurant in Asheville, NC

Outstanding restaurants abound in the Asheville area, but I don't think one could find better ambience or a more delicious meal than at Magnolia'sjust a short drive from the inn. Rich in history, Magnolia's offers an impressive menu with excellent service. My dinner was superb, and I unhesitatingly recommend dining at Magnolia's to others. In addition to an abundance of good places to dine in the Asheville area, the sights to see and things to do seem unending year-round. But, if you do not want to do anything but enjoy the ultimate in relaxation, Asia Bed and Spa is a place you can depend upon receiving that!

Capital B&Bs in our Nation's Capitol City

May 17, 2009 15:32 by Maxine
Swann House in Dupont Circle
Located within Washington DC's vibrant Dupont Circle, within walking distance of sightseeing destinations and excellent restaurants, Swann House Bed & Breakfast exemplifies a "capital" B&B with its comfortable lodging and outstanding personal service. Each guestroom and suite is tastefully decorated in a style reflecting its own unique  personality and offering guests an array of choices to best suit their particular needs. All rooms feature goose down featherbeds with down pillows, and select rooms boast wood-burning firplaces and/or private decks. I was especially attracted to the high-style decor found in the Il Duomo room on the third floor of the inn with its Gothic windows and cathedral ceiling. Its en suite turreted bath, embellished with a gilded domed ceiling and an Italian inspired mural, is equally elegant and well-appointed. The Jennifer Green's expansive bathroom is just as luxurious and features an oversized travertine marble shower and a whirlpool tub.

     Jennifer Green Room Deck
A blue-tiled pool provides the focal point of a private bricked garden--home to newly hatched ducklings during my visit to Swann House in early May. Since that time, the ducklings have been placed in a new home by Animal Rescue. Amelia, the Momma Duck, insists on providing her young with nothing less than the very best. So, each spring she returns to Swann House Bed and Breakfast to lay her eggs! I was able to enjoy observing Amelia and her ducklings from my private deck (photo below) of The Jennifer Green Room.
Jennifer Green Room Deck
Each afternoon tasty hors d'oeuvres and beverages are served to guests in the library. Cordials are offered in the evenings.  Early coffee is available each morning, and a lavish continental breakfast is served in the formal dining room featuring freshly baked specialties of the house.

The Swann House Bed and Breakfast is an inn that beckons its guests to return again and again!

The Intown Uptown Inn Garden area of Intown Uptown Inn

Guests sense a feeling of at-home comfort the moment they enter the charming Intown Uptown Inn, a Victorian home with easy metro access to the city's center and points of interest. The staff is warm and welcoming, and they take pride in making each guest feel like a VIP. Shortly after my mid-afternoon arrival, I enjoyed a cup of coffee and freshly baked cookies as I relaxed on a deck overlooking an attractive garden area--often the site of weddings and other special events.

The stairwell leading to the upper guestrooms is lined with beautifully framed portraits and works of art. I enjoyed peeking into the different bedchambers as I made my way to my quarters, Room with a View, on the top floor. Room with a View (far left photo below) has a separate sitting area and a private deck overlooking the city. In the adjacent hallway, there is a guest computer for the convenience of guests traveling without a laptop. Wifi is available throughout the inn.

Room with a View     Hollywood Room     Wisteria Room

Breakfast at The Intown Uptown Inn is exceptional, and the presentation is an impressive one. I especially liked the unique pewter rimmed china used at breakfast and also appreciated the fresh flowers adorning the tables. Breakfast is served in two attractive dining areas, and guests may either eat with other guests or at a private table with their traveling companion(s).

Breakfast Setting at Intown Uptown Inn

This is an ideal urban inn for both leisure and business travelers to consider staying in when visiting the Washington D.C. area. Parking is not a problem in the area of the inn, and that alone is a big plus. My stay at Intown Uptown Inn was an enjoyable one from beginning to end, and it is a B&B I hope to visit again.
