Rose on the Road – California Wine Country

July 27, 2009 11:50 by Rose

Imagine you are sitting on the deck of your own cottage; now add a bottle of fine Riesling or a Merlot which you purchased that afternoon at one of the local wineries, add some Marcona almonds or some cheese and freshly picked figs from the huge tree that fronts your cottage. If your stay in California’s wine country is at the Aurora Park Cottages, you don’t need to imagine it. This is how we spent our afternoons after returning from visiting the wineries and touring Napa, Sonoma and St. Helena.

Our cottage, Number 5, under the fig tree

Our first trip to the California wine country was made that much more enjoyable by Celeste Ford and Joe Hensley, innkeepers at the Aurora Park Cottages. In addition to the assortment of amenities in each cottage, Joe prepares an envelope with wine tasting notes that are very informative and helpful. Also included in your “welcome” envelope are some vouchers for free or discounted tastings at local wineries as well as vouchers for some the restaurants in Calistoga. Additionally, Joe and Celeste will print up an itinerary for you for any reservations they made have made.

The cottages are lovely. Comfortable beds, upholstered side chairs and table, and a café table and stools where you can enjoy the continental breakfast that is brought to your room each morning. Coffee service is set up on a side table and is available to you during your stay. My husband is an early riser and enjoyed putting on a fresh pot as soon as he awoke. There were apples and biscotti in the room as well as a refrigerator with soft drinks and water. My hubby is a jellybean junkie so finding a jar of Jelly Belly “beans” on the end table brought a big smile to his face.

Each morning, a light continental breakfast is served at your cottage. A basket containing juice, fresh fruit, warm croissants and Danish pastries arrives and you can choose to dine on your deck or in the cottage. With the wonderful weather we had, we always chose the deck.

There is a bounty of wonderful restaurants in the area including
Graystone, the Culinary Institute of America’s California campus, which we chose for our first evening. They even have outdoor dining on the deck overlooking the vineyard.

Joe arranged for last-minute reservations for us, and we enjoyed our meal immensely. Another excellent recommendation of Joe and Celeste’s is the Bar Vino restaurant. Lots of small bites, and there is a discount coupon in your welcome envelope.

Two of our favorite wineries were the Peju Province Winery in Napa and V. Sattui in St. Helena. We enjoyed the wines at Peju, our favorite being the 2008 Carnival, a delightful Columbard that is wonderful chilled especially with spicy foods or cheese pairings. This was one of the wines we brought back to the cottage.

  Entrance to Peju Tasting Room

The staff was delightful and knowledgeable. Enjoyable too, are the gardens, fountains, koi pond and sculptures at Peju, which were magnificent.

At V. Sattui we purchased lunch from the onsite gourmet deli, which we then took out to the picnic area to enjoy. After lunch, when we went to the tasting room and discovered that we could have experienced a food and wine pairing for lunch in place of the classic tasting. Next time we will know. Here our favorite wine was the Gamay Rose. We did a special tasting of the Madeira, which we both felt was exceptional. V. Sattui wines are only sold at the winery and not distributed to stores or restaurants.

Another fun tasting was at the St. Helena Olive Oil Company where you are able to sample the oils, vinegars and some condiments. You'll find it on Rte. 29 just before entering the village if you are driving north.

We wish we could have spent more time with Joe and Celeste, but our charming innkeepers departed on a trip prior to the end of our stay. We were left in the very capable hands of Betty Gladden, innkeeper and inn-sitter extraordinaire. She was a delight. All in all, our first trip to the California wine country was great fun, and the contemporary Aurora Park Cottages was an excellent choice for lodging.

Rose On The Road - B&B Seminars and Retreats

June 16, 2009 15:34 by Rose
After reading an article about the popularity of learning vacations, I was reminded of an Inn-to-Inn Cooking Tour my husband and I experienced many years ago in New Hampshire’s White Mountains. We stayed at three different B&Bs/inns over the course of four days and each one sponsored a different course. It was great fun and the men enjoyed it as much as the women. In fact, it drove my husband to take classes at the Culinary Institute of America after he retired. While most people will associate cooking classes with inns, there are many other opportunities offered to guests including craft workshops, getaways for gardeners, birding weekends and even  “green” projects. Some current specials include:
Living room at the Silver Star B&B

Three- and five-day quilting retreats are offered at the Silver Star B&B Country Inn, Spring Green, WI, with nationally known quilt teacher, Judy Hasheider.

In the garden at The Valentine B&B, Niagara on the Lake

The Valentine B&B located in the charming village of Niagara-on-the-Lake in Canada arranges tours of local gardens including the Niagara Horticultural Garden as well as the gardens and herb gardens of historic homes.

The Back Porch at The Limestone B&B
If scrapbooking, knitting or other portable craft your passion, The Limestone Inn B&B in State College, PA, has a large back porch to spread out with your crafts. A lunch as well as breakfasts are included with craft getaways.

The Ruby of Crested Butte B&B in Colorado is offering several specials including the Give and Getaway package where they arrange an environmental project for and you get a discount on your stay plus some eco-friendly gifts.

The Ruby of Crested Butte B&B
... however, if a cooking class is still your desire, what could be better then cooking in Italy? The 5 Chimmeys B&B in Mombello Monferrato would be a wonderful choice. Breakfasts and dinners are included, and you can also include two other tours in the package.

Rose on the Road – Hopewell Junction, NY (Hudson Valley)

May 31, 2009 16:03 by Rose

My “backyard,” so to speak, is the historic Hudson Valley of New York. Since I am often asked for recommendations, and it has been awhile since visiting some of the local bed and breakfasts, my husband and I did a quick overnight at the Bykenhulle House B&B in Hopewell Junction.

 Bykenhulle House B&B at dusk

A Georgian colonial listed in the National Register of Historic Places, Bykenhulle House is located in the heart of the Hudson Valley, midway between New York City and Albany. The house and property are both wonderful examples of architecture and landscaping. Innkeeper Jackie Huber is charming and attentive. She enjoys assisting guests with itineraries and restaurant recommendations. The three guest rooms and two suites are beautifully decorated, each has a fireplace and the suites have whirlpool tubs. Two of the rooms, including the one we stayed in, The Master Room, have wood burning fireplaces. The suites and the Blue Room have electric fireplaces.   Beds were comfy with lovely linens and towels thick and fluffy.

Woodburning Fireplace, Master Room      Master Room

Jackie’s yummy three-course breakfast started with fresh melon and blueberries with a syrup glace, followed by warm muffins; our entrée was perfectly scrambled eggs with smoked salmon and avocado. Juice, coffee and an assortment of teas were also offered. In addition to a destination from which you can explore all the Hudson Valley has to offer, Bykenhulle House is ideal for weddings, bridal showers, teas and even corporate events. The grounds are exquisite, and every wedding is unique. Ivy Hall, a separate building, is also perfect for small affairs. It also contains a suite, usually reserved for the bride and groom.

Dining in the area offers many options, from the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, to the abundance of smaller gourmet and family restaurants. One of our personal favorites, Aroma Osteriais also on Jackie’s list of recommended restaurants. As always, we were not disappointed with our meal or service. Some pastas and cheeses are made on the premises. We especially enjoy the very authentic Italian ricotta cheesecake – it is so reminiscent of my Mom’s.

The Hudson Valley offers museums like the Dia in Beacon as well as numerous historic homes and sites along the Hudson River including those of Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt and the Vanderbilt Mansion in Hyde ParkThe small city of Hudson, NY has become a mecca for antique collectors and designer brands rarely seen at discount malls can be found at Woodbury Common Premium Outlets. There is much to do in the valley, and Jackie will be happy to assist.

So come visit, enjoy my backyard. Spend the day touring historic sites, hiking, taking a riverboat cruise on the Hudson, shopping, visiting a winery and dining in wonderful restaurants. At day’s end, you can recharge and enjoy a delightful stay the Bykenhulle House B&B.
