Rose on the Road – Hopewell Junction, NY (Hudson Valley)

My “backyard,” so to speak, is the historic Hudson Valley of New York. Since I am often asked for recommendations, and it has been awhile since visiting some of the local bed and breakfasts, my husband and I did a quick overnight at the Bykenhulle House B&B in Hopewell Junction.

A Georgian colonial listed in the National Register of Historic Places, Bykenhulle House is located in the heart of the Hudson Valley, midway between New York City and Albany. The house and property are both wonderful examples of architecture and landscaping. Innkeeper Jackie Huber is charming and attentive. She enjoys assisting guests with itineraries and restaurant recommendations. The three guest rooms and two suites are beautifully decorated, each has a fireplace and the suites have whirlpool tubs. Two of the rooms, including the one we stayed in, The Master Room, have wood burning fireplaces. The suites and the Blue Room have electric fireplaces.   Beds were comfy with lovely linens and towels thick and fluffy.

Jackie’s yummy three-course breakfast started with fresh melon and blueberries with a syrup glace, followed by warm muffins; our entrée was perfectly scrambled eggs with smoked salmon and avocado. Juice, coffee and an assortment of teas were also offered. In addition to a destination from which you can explore all the Hudson Valley has to offer, Bykenhulle House is ideal for weddings, bridal showers, teas and even corporate events. The grounds are exquisite, and every wedding is unique. Ivy Hall, a separate building, is also perfect for small affairs. It also contains a suite, usually reserved for the bride and groom.

Dining in the area offers many options, from the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, to the abundance of smaller gourmet and family restaurants. One of our personal favorites, Aroma Osteriais also on Jackie’s list of recommended restaurants. As always, we were not disappointed with our meal or service. Some pastas and cheeses are made on the premises. We especially enjoy the very authentic Italian ricotta cheesecake – it is so reminiscent of my Mom’s.

The Hudson Valley offers museums like the Dia in Beacon as well as numerous historic homes and sites along the Hudson River including those of Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt and the Vanderbilt Mansion in Hyde ParkThe small city of Hudson, NY has become a mecca for antique collectors and designer brands rarely seen at discount malls can be found at Woodbury Common Premium Outlets. There is much to do in the valley, and Jackie will be happy to assist.

So come visit, enjoy my backyard. Spend the day touring historic sites, hiking, taking a riverboat cruise on the Hudson, shopping, visiting a winery and dining in wonderful restaurants. At day’s end, you can recharge and enjoy a delightful stay the Bykenhulle House B&B.
