Cheaper by the Dozen: Tip #4

September 28, 2009 10:20 by Marti

Continuing in our series about ways to save on B&B getaways, we present tip #4. However, before going on to it, I thought I should mention that I toured B&Bs this weekend and was delighted to find at each lovely inn where I stayed, I was offered a complimentary glass of wine, along with a fresh cheese platter (at Jacob Hill Inn), fresh baked cookies (at Inn at Harbor Hill Marina and Jacob Hill Inn), and fresh fruit and chocolates. I am always amazed at the added value offered at B&Bs; benefits that would add up to as much as $180 at expensive hotels.

Tip # 4: Bring your own wine. Rather than going out to bars, where drinks can total as much as $20, bring your own wine or cocktails and enjoy them in the privacy of your room or perhaps on a scenic porch overlooking a beautiful view.

Eleonora and Bill of The Jacob Hill Inn in Seekonk has done a consistently marvelous job of making their guests feel right at home.  My wife and I enjoyed their amazing hospitality while there.  Their rooms look fabulous as usual.
When you break down the services that B&Bs offer it adds up to a substantial amount and as innkeepers we should be aware of this value when selling our guests.
At Arbor View House we have always been cautious about serving wine to our guests upon arrival.  In NY state innkeepers are allowed to buy a liquor license and that will allow them to legally to serve or sell wine.  Our concern is that if they were to go out after having a drink or two and have an accident then the Inn and Innkeepers might be named in the suit. As a result we haven't done it as a general rule.
What we sometimes do is offer a cordial or brandy after dinner.
