Recipe of the Week: Warm and Spicy Pears

November 28, 2011 10:58 by Emily

It's getting cold out there! Warm up with this sweet recipe from Deutsche Strasse (German Street) Bed and Breakfast in New Ulm, MN. The 1884 home overlooks the Minnesota River Valley and is four blocks from the shops of downtown. Here is what the innkeepers say about the recipe: "We serve two of the warmed pear halves per person with some of the cooked syrup in stemmed dessert dishes as a fruit starter for our breakfasts during the cold winter months in Minnesota."

Warm and Spicy Pears

Prep time: 15 minutes
Serves: 4

Ingredients:

  • 1 16-oz. can of pear halves
  • 1/3 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon fresh ground nutmeg
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • Heavy whipping cream, whipped and sweetened to taste

Steps:

1. Drain syrup from pears into a heavy 1-quart saucepan; set the pears aside.
2. Add the brown sugar, nutmeg and cinnamon to the syrup. Bring to a boil over a medium high heat. Reduce heat and simmer, uncovered, for 5 minutes, stirring frequently.
3. Add pears, stir slightly and then simmer about 5 minutes more or until heated through.
4. Remove from heat. A dollop of whipped cream added to the top of each serving at the last minute adds a wonderful flavor. For an added touch during the holidays, sprinkle a little green decorating sugar on the whipped cream and add a cherry on top.
