Saugatauk reminds us that one-tank trips are still vacations

This article in the New York Times about visiting Saugatauk, Michigan, reminds me that while a getaway within one to two hours from home hardly used to qualify for a vacation, it is quickly becoming the vacation staple of today.  Out with the old conventional wisdom that getting away meant going as far away as possible, preferably by plane.  In with the newer idea of one-tank getaways and the newest "staycation".  As we approach fall foliage season here in New England and many other parts of the country, we can add gorgeous sightseeing tours through mountain and wooded vacation regions to the long list of other things to do at close-to-home B&Bs.  We feel fairly confident in saying that the vast majority of B&Bs are within an easy one-tank getaway from major cities.  Inherent in the hospitality is the B&B getaway; pampering, individualized and highly welcoming filled with extras like hearty breakfasts, lavish linens, free wi-fi access and more.

Great Views of Moosehead Lake from Blair Hill Inn

Here are some of my favorite picks for one-tank getaways:

- Blair Hill Inn, overlooking Moosehead Lake in Greenville, Maine is an easy one-tank trip from Portland, Maine.  Another great Greenville choice is the Greenville Inn, an easy walk from town.

- Garth Woodside Mansion of Mark Twain's Hanibal, MO, is a quick trip from St. Louis.  Another great idea, heading south is Hermann Hill, a B&B resort of sorts in Missouri wine country. (who knew Missouri had a great wine country?)

- Boston Yacht Haven, located at the end of Constitution Pier in Boston, is walking distance to all the great restaurants of the North End and Boston's siteseeing.  This is a great one-tank trip from anywhere in New England; we took the train and walked from North Station.

- Five Gables Inn and Spa in beautiful St Michaels, MD is an easy drive from Baltimore or Washington, DC.  Another great choice within an easy drive of DC are the Williamsburg B&Bs.  We love The Cedars of Williamsburg there.

- The Inn Above Onion Creek in Texas Hill Country is a true favorite with beautiful and spacious rooms, with views even from the loo!  It's an easy one-tank round trip from Austin or San Antonio.

I could go on and on about all the great one-tank B&B getaways.  There are so many beautiful regions and cities that feature fabulous inns.  Let us know some of yours.
